Commencement Speech by Chairman Peter Kuo

2024 Yu-Tsai Graduation Speech

Chairman Prof. Peter C. Kuo

Life Is About Learning and Loving

Principal Tony, PTA Chairman Fu Yu, Honorable Guests, Teachers, Parents, 5th Graders and Graduates:

Congratulations! We are so proud of this year’s graduates. And your teachers and parents are surely proud of you. We watched you growing up and learning so well and so much. We are going to miss you very much, especially those of you who started at Yeh-Sheng, Fu-You and Young Stars.

This year’s graduation is also meaningful to me personally. I just attended my first granddaughter’s high school graduation in America. Zoe actually started school at Yu-Tsai 12 years ago when our daughter’s family moved back to Taiwan for one year. She was lucky to study in a first grade bilingual class. How time flies and now all Zoe’s Taiwanese classmates are also going to college. Zoe studied Chinese in middle and high school, but her Chinese will never be as good as her Yu-Tsai classmates or anyone of you. But her parents and grandma and I are proud and pleased that she can speak with us in Chinese. So first of all, congratulations for learning well both Chinese and English and building a solid foundation for becoming truly bilingual.

And as I often say, “Life is all about learning; it makes every day worth living. Fun and friends also teach us life’s meaning. Even hardship can make us more resilient and loving.” Mr. Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA when speaking with students of Stanford University, emphasized the importance of hardship and pain for success.

And when I look back in my life, I found that I was so fortunate to have learned so much from so many people: my parents, teachers, students, friends, colleagues, customers, suppliers, in Taiwan and many countries, even my own children and grandchildren. I learned that you never stop learning. It is true life is all about learning and loving. I also learned from my own adversity and became stronger. I feel so blessed. I wake up every morning excited about learning new things.

My dear graduates, what did you learn at Yu-Tsai that you treasure the most? What do you look forward to learning in life? I hope you learned at least to enjoy learning about the world, to make friends, to exercise and have healthy habits. Did you learn to appreciate music, art and other things of beauty in life? Did you learn that you wanted to be a leader? Did you learn that to be a leader you have to work harder and serve better than others? And good leaders also need to have compassion. If you did, then one day you will be successful leaders. Society needs more true leaders, because through leadership, we can contribute more and change the world.

So on behalf of all Yu-Tsai, I want to thank you teachers who have been the most patient, loving and creative gardeners in cultivating our young Yu-Tsai trees. (Please give them a big applause.)

May your life be fun and full of sunshine and friendship; may you turn all hardships into love and courage. May you learn throughout life and share your life and light up the world.

Goodbye and farewell,
Godspeed and good luck to all of you. Thank you!

Commencement Speech by PTA Chairman Yuan-Chia Ho

The Graduation Trip, June 11- June 13,

G6 Homeroom Teachers' Graduation Remarks

Blueni Liu, 6 Zhi

Sam Lin, 6 Ren

Rulu Yang, 6 Red

Mrs.Lisa De Bruyn, 6 Red

Good morning, Principal, Chairman, esteemed guests, family members, and the graduating class of 2024 from Yu-Tsai, it’s an honor to stand before you today. As we bid farewell to elementary school, I can’t help but reflect on our journey together. We’ve weathered singing contests, reader’s theaters, exams, and behavior that defies the laws of physics.

Today is bittersweet. It’s sad to say goodbye, but I’m excited for the great things ahead for each of you. We’ve had an interesting time together. I’ve definitely grown as a teacher as I saw things that can never be unseen.

In our journey through elementary school, we faced storms together. Sometimes we stumbled, sometimes we fell, but we always stood back up as a class, united and resilient. Challenging times taught us that even when we made mistakes, we were stronger when we faced them together. Even when our viewpoints differ, we’re like puzzle pieces—distinct, yet fitting together,

So, dear students, as you venture into middle school, remember these three things.

Embrace Being Different: You’re unique, like that kid who insists on wearing mismatched sneakers. Celebrate your quirks, because normal is overrated.

Learn from Mistakes: Sure, you accidentally dropped a green building or crashed a food truck. But guess what? Life’s full of experiments. Keep mixing things up!

Kindness Matters: Be kinder than a grandma offering cookies. Smile at strangers, share your things, and remember that everyone’s fighting a secret battle.

As your teacher, I’m proud of how well you’ve learned. I hope you look back on these years with fondness, treasuring the memories at Yu-Tsai. May the friendships last a lifetime, and the knowledge guide your future. I know you’ll achieve great things.

Remember a mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work if it’s not open. The choice is yours. May good fortune be with you.

Congratulations and goodbye, until we meet again.

Jane Fong, 6 Yellow

Ms. Lolit Carranza-Chen, 6 Yellow

To our distinguished guests, esteemed school administrators, hardworking fellow teachers, the graduating class of 2024 and their families, a very pleasant good morning to all of you.

First of all, congratulations to the entire class of 2024 – you’ve finally made it!

All of us present here today are beaming with pride, joy and gratitude because we are celebrating a milestone – the completion of your elementary studies and the beginning of the next stage which is junior high school.

Your journey towards this day was not an easy one. Our world was turned upside down with the arrival of Covid19 only a few years ago. Just like your peers in every part of the world, you braved the storm brought by the pandemic. You attended classes online, and you were not able to see anyone except maybe close family members, and you learned to roll with the flow in the midst of uncertainties. At such a young age, you all survived these challenges remarkably well. You’re an amazing group!

To my students in 6 Yellow Class, you were dealt with another disruption, another challenge, as you had to adapt to a new teacher just as you were about to reach the finish line in 6th grade. I was that teacher, and I had the privilege of teaching you for a short period of time. Having a new teacher when you were almost at the end of 6th grade was certainly an unwelcome disruption, just like the pandemic, but not as life threatening. It meant having new ways of doing things, a new set of routines, and a different set of expectations. In my first week on the job, a skeptic among you asked as I was teaching a new material “Is that true? Did you Google it?” It was amazing – that unshakeable faith in Google.

These unexpected disruptions are part and parcel of living. This is because life doesn’t follow the expected. Nothing in this life is permanent except change. It pays to remember that when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. It’s one way of saying: make the best out of a bad situation. You adapt.

When faced with difficult situations, continue to persevere. Just like during the pandemic, you kept going. Perseverance isn’t just about finishing a race; it’s about doing what is needed to be done even when it’s difficult or boring. According to the great Martin Luther, "If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward."

Thank you.

Olivia Hsu, 6 Blue

Mr. Andre Brand, 6 Blue

“The Unstoppable Pen”

To everyone here today…

I want to say thank you to all the teachers, staff and parents who made it possible for these students to achieve all of the amazing things they have. It is stated that a village is needed to raise a child…so rejoice in all of the accomplishments these students receive here today, since you worked just as hard in achieving them.

To the students…

Normally when a person makes a speech they praise you for all of your achievements and congratulate you and thank you, but today I want to do something a little different. I want to give you one more lesson…one that will help you in becoming not only the best students which we already know you are, but also the best people that will shape the future of tomorrow.

Start off by looking at this pen…

A simple tool, yet powerful beyond measure…

I can be negative towards the pen…”You are horrible! You are useless! You are worthless! But look…the pen does not change...”

I can also be positive towards the pen…”You are amazing! You are wonderful! You are the best thing ever! But look again…the pen still did not change...”

This pen doesn’t waver; it remains steady, no matter what’s happening around it and no matter who says what to it. It doesn’t care about external pressures or doubts. Instead, it writes with purpose and determination. This pen here graded your tests and exams, gave you scores and helped to shape your future…and it did so without hesitation.

You, my dear students, should try to be like the pen. Life will throw challenges your way, but remember: you’re unyielding. When doubts creep in, declare, “I am enough.” When expectations weigh you down, lift your pen high and say, “I am resilient.”

Your journey isn’t about being perfect; it’s about progress. Each stroke of your pen—each word, each math problem, each expression—is a step forward. Embrace the mistakes; they shape your story. Celebrate the victories; they highlight your growth.

As you step into the unknown, hold your pen with pride. Every time you see your pen in your hand, remember that it symbolizes your courage and potential. Write your own story, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and kindness. And when storms come…and they will come…, remember: you’re the author of your destiny, and this pen—this unstoppable pen—will write your triumphs.

Congratulations, Class of 2024!

From the Parents

Mother of Adam Chang, 6 Blue

Good day, let me first thank the principal, the Chairman, and all honorable guests; I am overwhelmed with emotions while standing here today. I have watched class after class of graduates spread their wings and soar every year, and this year, it is finally my children's turn to take off! I feel extremely blessed to join everyone in wishing this group of sweet graduates the best wishes as they embark on a new journey. I would like to extend special gratitude to the teachers of the graduating classes for your hard work and dedication. I believe the teachers feel the same deep reluctance that I feel as we say farewell to this group of children.

I still remember that day when I held the children's hands along with a group of parents as we walked into the school with uncertainties and wonders. Now, seeing this group of precious ones grow into independent youths with thoughts, I praise the miracle of life. I am grateful for the companionship we've mutually shared, and that it is fate that has brought us together.

Therefore, I think it would be inappropriate for me to speak to the graduates from the perspective of young children, as after today, everyone will be advancing to the phase of teenagers to become a youth, symbolizing a new level of responsibility. A responsibility to think critically and discriminate wisely, especially in this era where a large amount of information can be accessed easily on the internet, it will be crucial to learn how to tell right from wrong and to be able to view things from different perspectives. Only by doing so will you realize that there is always more than one side to the truth, and only with this attitude of thinking critically and discriminating wisely will you see the nature of things clearly, guiding you in the right direction.

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, once said a phrase, which is also the phrase that I would like to share with the graduates today: "Cleverness is a gift, kindness is a choice." I want to tell everyone that I hope, more that you will choose to become a kind and stand-up adult than achieve success and fame, that you can still see the needs of those around you while pursuing your goals, and provide them with care, as well as be willing to take on more responsibilities.

As you leave Yu Tsai today, please don't forget your classmates, your teachers, as well as the innocent, kind, and diligent version of yourself that spent six years at Yu Tsai. Best wishes to all of you on your journey to becoming the best versions of you! Good luck!

Good morning, parents, students, guests, board members, Principal Tony, and teachers.

All good things must end, and today marks the end of our time at Yu-Tsai.

I remember starting here in first grade, thinking sixth grade was so far away. But now, here we are, graduating. Where did the time go?

Like my classmates, I’m excited about the future. Some knew their junior high plans early, while others figured it out along the way, sometimes changing their minds multiple times.

I’m also sad that I won’t see my friends’ faces every day. We won’t laugh and joke together here anymore, our home for the past six years. We won’t see our teachers' smiles or hear their jokes. Things will get harder from here, but we’re ready. The Class of 2024 is ready!

Education is a powerful tool to change the world, and we owe thanks to our teachers at Yu-Tsai. Thank you to the English teachers for teaching us, playing with us, and helping us learn beyond the books. Our strong English skills will help us in the future.

Thank you to the Chinese teachers for supporting and encouraging us from day one. You gave us a solid foundation and the confidence to reach our goals.

To my classmates, thank you for making my time here amazing. From classes to breaks, field trips, and competitions, you were like family. To my closest friends, thank you for always being there, helping me, and sharing joy. Though we part ways, you will always be in my heart.

Lastly, to our parents, thank you for giving us the chance to attend this wonderful school. From helping with homework to teaching patience, and reviewing vocabulary, you’ve been there every step of the way. Thank you.

Thank you to everyone at Yu-Tsai. Congratulations to the Class of 2024—we did it!

Dear principal, teachers, honored guests, parents, and fellow graduates, today marks a significant milestone in our lives as we stand here on the brim of completing our fifth-grade journey. It feels like just yesterday we were nervously entering our first day of elementary school, unsure of what lay ahead. But here we are, ready to bid farewell to this chapter of our lives and embark on the exciting adventure of elementary school.

As we reflect on our time in fifth grade, we can't help but feel a touch of sadness knowing that our sixth graders, will soon be leaving us. They've been more than just schoolmates; they've been mentors and friends who have guided us through the challenges of school life. Whether it was helping us with homework, studying for tests, or supporting us in science fairs and projects, the sixth graders have been there every step of the way, teaching us valuable lessons about perseverance, teamwork, and achieving our goals.

Although we'll miss our sixth-grade friends dearly, we know that their departure signifies growth and progress. They've shown us what it means to strive for excellence and to support one another, and we are grateful for the impact they've had on our lives. As we prepare to take the next big leap into sixth grade, let's carry with us the lessons we've learned and the friendships we've forged. And as we move forward, let's remember to always be there for each other, just as the sixth graders have been there for us.

So, to our departing sixth-grade friends, we bid you farewell with a heavy heart but also with immense pride. Please know that our school doors will always be open to you, and we hope you'll come back to visit often. You leave us as proud graduates, and we have no doubt that you'll continue to make us proud wherever your journey takes you. Farewell, sixth grade, and may you go forth with courage, kindness, and the knowledge that you will always have a home here with us.

Thank you, classmates, teachers, and parents, for making our fifth-grade journey one to remember.
